I have always enjoyed exercising and spending time outdoors surrounded by nature.

When an injury meant I could no longer go running I decided to give Nordic walking a try as my new way of getting out and keeping fit. That was one of the best decisions ever!!

Exercising outdoors did wonders for my mental health, and I was so impressed by the improvement in my overall fitness and posture that I trained as a Nordic walking instructor so that I could share this ‘magical exercise’ with others.

I truly enjoy the new friendships that have been formed through the Club and joining members on their journey to a better, healthier life.

I’ve always loved walking and after reading about the benefits of Nordic Walking, I was intrigued as to how different it would be. Semi-retirement from work gave me the push to find out and I haven’t looked back!

I’ve suffered from lower back and neck problems and find Nordic Walking has increased my core strength more than ordinary walking and has improved my overall fitness. More than that I really enjoy getting out in the open air, meeting new people and discovering different walks. On a recent walk a member of our group remarked “What a perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon” – I couldn’t agree more, it really is great for mind, body and soul.

I have always loved walking and outdoor activities and in early 2020 decided to start a new fitness hobby. I have been reaping the benefits of Nordic Walking for over a year now and can say that it has truly been a game changer, both in terms of general well-being and the benefits of socially interacting with others in the group while out walking.

In recent years, I have encountered lower back issues and attended Physiotherapy appointments twice a month. Since starting Nordic Walking, I have been only once in 12 months. The results speak for themselves!

I have also been amazed by some of the lovely rolling Hertfordshire countryside on our doorstep, sometimes less than 2 miles away. This can leave you with that ‘holiday feeling’ on a regular basis.

Nordic Walking is a genuine all-year-round activity regardless of the weather and seasons (headtorches worn if needed) and covers a variety of distances. I enjoy promoting my love of the outdoors and Nordic Walking and I am delighted to be part of the 4 Rivers team as a WALX Guide.

Having spent the last 20+ years doing no exercise I wanted to find an activity to redress that as I approached retirement. I’m not a gym person and love being outside regardless of the weather so having seen something about Nordic walking I decided to see what was available locally.

I found this group in February 2022, signed up for the Taster session and was hooked!

I was very worried about my fitness level when I started but the reassurance I got from everyone in the group made a huge difference. 12 months into retirement I’m now walking regularly every week. My fitness has improved, as has my aching back, and I’ve learnt to slow down to appreciate the surrounding nature again.

I’ve also developed friendships through the group which is an added bonus.

I was thrilled to be asked to be a Walx leader to help support the current members and new People joining the Walx Group.

It’s definitely been one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Feel the tensions melt away

I really enjoy getting out for walks on a regular basis. I've lived in Hertford for many years now and to discover new walks in the surrounding countryside has been great and makes me appreciate even more what a lovely place we live in. My overall fitness has improved, particularly my core strength. Being able to get out into the beautiful countryside for walks during lockdown has been great for my wellbeing - as soon as you push away with those poles you start to feel lighter and any tensions melt away!

Nordic walking is an activity that people of all ages can enjoy

I have been doing Nordic walking for just over a year now and I can honestly say that it is one of the best things I have ever done. I have always enjoyed walking and rambling.  I decided to try Nordic walking as it combined my love of walking and nature with an activity that seemed to have so many health benefits. Nordic walking really does provide a whole-body workout.  It improves posture, strengthens your core, exercises your arms and provides an overall sense of wellbeing too. As well as the Explorer WALX, I have also taken part in the Yoga WALX.  These combine Nordic walking, yoga postures and mindfulness and are a lovely way to practise yoga outdoors, appreciate your surroundings, gain some headspace and relax. I have made lots of friends through Nordic walking and look forward to the friendly chats on the walks each week.  Since my son has been taking part, I have found that it really is a great way to spend time together doing an activity we both love – proof that Nordic walking really is an activity people of all ages can enjoy.

It's amazing the benefits that the poles add!

I have always enjoyed keeping fit and going to classes however when I retired I wanted to do an exercise I could do outside and also a group activity to meet new people. I had heard about Nordic Walking and was interested to learn more so I went online to find a group near me.  Linda called me from WALX 4 Rivers and was very helpful and explained how it worked.  I did the Power of Poles course and have not looked back! Not only have I met a really great group of people who made me feel welcome from the start but I also enjoy the Nordic Walking and have seen an improvement in my overall fitness levels and also a more toned upper body in a short space of time. It's amazing by using the poles the benefits they add compared to just walking. With each new walk I am also discovering countryside/places I never knew existed which is an added bonus and I get to choose the walks I want to do and when, so it's very flexible and suitable for all abilities! It doesn't feel like exercising, just a lovely walk with a great group of people with the added bonus of keeping fit.
